Most new PCs and laptops sold today will allow you to access the
internet and bank online. The minimum specification you should consider is:

• Pentium-type or compatible running at 200Mhz or more
• Memory 64MB of RAM
• Resolution 1024x768 with at least 256k colour

• Operating system: NetBank works efficiently on most operating systems. We recommend the Windows™ operating system, Windows XP™, but you can also use Windows 2000™, Windows NT4™, Windows ME, Windows 98™, Windows Vista™, or Apple Macintosh OS X™.
• Microsoft Internet Explorer (6 or 7); Mozilla Firefox (2x or3x); Opera (8x or 9x), Safari (3x) and Netscape (7x and above).
• MAC users can use Opera, Safari or Mozilla Firefox browsers.

Note: The internet banking website has been designed for the recommended browser versions and Nedbank cannot guarantee that it will work on other versions.

Nedbank takes stringent steps to ensure that only you (or someone authorised by you) can gain access to your accounts.

A world-class solution that makes internet banking completely secure has therefore been implemented. Here are some of our security measures.

When you first use Nedbank Internet banking, enter your profile number and authenticate it by adding your password. In the interests of security you will then be required to create your unique password. From then on, whenever you bank via NetBank, you must enter your profile number and password.

In an attempt to further ensure that no one else accesses your banking details, Nedbank Internet banking automatically terminates your online banking session if you leave your computer unattended for more than eight minutes. If your password is entered incorrectly three times, it will no longer be valid. You will need to revisit your Internet banking consultant with your valid passport and request another temporary password.

When confidential information (e.g. profile number, password, account details and transactions) is transmitted over the internet, Nedbank Internet banking encrypts it to protect it from unauthorised people.

What is encryption?

Encryption converts a meaningful message or other information into something meaningless to those without the authority to view it. It also allows an authorised person to ’decrypt’ the message, i.e. to convert it back into its original form. Encryption and decryption make it possible to pass messages between two (or more) people/computers without allowing anyone else to understand them.

What kind of encryption does Nedbank Internet banking use?

Nedbank doesn’t encrypt information that is publicly available. Your NetBank banking session, however, is protected by the highest level of security, provided by an internationally tried-and tested encryption technique that is significantly stronger than the 40-bit-key industry standard.

Without getting too technical, our technique is based on Secure Sockets Layer SSL standard (of a similar strength to that used by other leading international internet banks) that encrypts information between your web browser and our banking World Wide Web server.

How do I encrypt my secure communications with Nedbank?

If you have the browsers Microsoft IE 6 or higher, Mozilla Firefox 2.x or higher, Opera 8 or higher, Safari 3x or higher, Netscape 7x or higher (all of which are SGC-capable), you’ll be able to access NetBank without any additional software. These browsers supply 128-bit encryption to NetBank, and 40-bit encryption to non-banking sites that require encryption.

How do I know when my communication with Nedbank is encrypted?

To verify the security of your connection; Double-click on the lock displayed on the bottom right of the status bar. Click on ‘View’ to view the certificate properties and then click on the ‘General’ tab at the top. You may also view the other tabs which will contain more information on the certificate.

If you want to be sure that you are at the genuine Nedbank Internet banking site, look for our website signature, in the form of digital certificates. These confirm that you are connected to the correct site.

To use this facility always check the certificate to ensure that it is valid, as described above. Certificates have to be verified on the NetBank site.

How to verify the Nedbank Internet banking site certificate if you use a SGC browser:

Browsers will allow you to view a site certificate from the ’Properties’ option under the ’File’ menu bar item at the top of your screen.

Or by double-clicking the lock icon and selecting ‘View’ to view the certificate properties. Select the ‘General’ or any other tab from the top to view different certificate data.
